Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 24

verdict
Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes ob, dis and eu, the suffix fy, and the roots vert, cav and grat.

PREFIXES

The prefix ob (and its variants of and op) means “block”, "against" or "over". Perhaps, you will recognize the word obstacle.

The prefix dys means “bad” or "deformed". When we have an upset stomach or indigestion, we have dyspepsia.

The prefix eu means “good”. When someone has passed away, a speaker sometimes will deliver a eulogy in which he says nice things about the deceased person.

ROOTS

The root vert (and its variant vers) means “turn”. Some sports cars are convertibles.

The root cav means “to make hollow”. Cavemen very likely could never visit a dentist when they got a cavity in a tooth.

The root grat means “thanks" or "agreeable". If you already know the meaning of this root, congratulations!

SUFFIXES

The suffix fy means “make” or “do”. No doubt you understand the word magnify.
